CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “[‘He calls each one by name’] – Message for the Day of Vocations 1971” – Blessed Pope Paul VI/ DailyGospel

“When Jesus presented himself as the Good Shepherd, he referred to a long biblical tradition, with which his disciples and the other auditors were already familiar. The God of Israel, in fact, had always revealed himself as the Good Shepherd of his people. He had listened to its complaints, he had freed it from the land of servitude and, in his goodness, he had guided the people he saved during its long and hard march in the desert towards the promised land … From age to age, the Lord continued guiding his people – much more – he carried it in his arms as a shepherd carries his sheep. He also led it after the punishment of the exile, calling it once again and gathering the lost sheep to bring them to their fathers’ land. …”

“… In his homily during the liturgy, #PopeFrancis said the #Gospel must be proclaimed with humility, overcoming the temptation of pride. The Holy Father spoke about the necessity for Christians of “going out to proclaim” the Good News. A preacher, he said, must always be on a journey, and not seek “an insurance policy,” seeking safety by remaining in one place. …”

“… Duty of honouring Divine Mercy: The faithful with deep spiritual affection are drawn to commemorate the mysteries of divine pardon and to celebrate them devoutly. They clearly understand the supreme benefit, indeed the duty, that the People of God have to praise Divine Mercy with special prayers and, at the same time, they realize that by gratefully performing the works required and satisfying the necessary conditions, they can obtain spiritual benefits that derive from the Treasury of the Church. “The paschal mystery is the culmination of this revealing and effecting of mercy, which is able to justify man, to restore justice in the sense of that salvific order which God willed from the beginning in man, and through man, in the world” (Encyclical Letter Dives in misericordia, n. 7). …”

“… Sin leads people to be unsatisfied with what God has done for them and go looking for other idols and other gods, the pope said. The Israelites who made the golden calf — the subject of the day’s first reading from Exodus — were not an exception. …”

CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: [Trust in Divine Providence; One Cannot Serve Both God and Mammon,] Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, Sunday, February 27, 2011

“… Jesus urges His Disciples to trust in the Providence of the heavenly Father … ‘Therefore do not be anxious, saying “what shall we eat?” or “what shall we wear?”. For the Gentiles seek all these things and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all”. … the Lord wants to make people understand clearly that it is impossible to serve two masters: God and mammon [riches]. Whoever believes in God, the Father full of love for his children, puts first the search for His Kingdom and His Will. …”

“… Figari’s crime of abuse of office cannot be prosecuted because of a statute of limitations, however, and he cannot be prosecuted for his abuse of minors under canon 1395 because he is a layman, and not a cleric – the only persons covered by that canon. However, his sexual abuse of minors means he is to be dismissed from his institute, unless “the superior decides that dismissal is not completely necessary and that correction of the member, restitution of justice, and reparation of scandal can be resolved sufficiently in another way.’ …”

The Vatican reports, through News.Va, that #PopeFrancis, in a Spanish-speaking video message, has issued a good will message on the occasion of the 2017 #SuperBowl in Houston.:

In a specially recorded video message for the event which holds the attention of much of the nation and commands a television audience larger than for any other event of the year, the Pope pointed out that great sporting events like the championship game of the National Football League are highly symbolic, and show that it is possible to build a culture of encounter and a world of peace. ‘By participating in sport, we are able to go beyond our own self-interest – and in a healthy way – we learn to sacrifice, to grow in fidelity and respect the rules. May this year’s Super Bowl be a sign of peace, friendship and solidarity to the world’ he said.

The Vatican version of the video is embedded below, which appeared to lack an English translation.
