CATHOLIC FAITHWATCH: “Pope’s Lenten Message calls for conversion” – Vatican News

Cross Atop Rocky Cliff

“Pope Francis is calling on the faithful not to let the Lenten season of grace pass in vain, and to live as children of God acknowledging and obeying His law, in particular in regards to our brothers and sisters and to creation.

In this year’s Lenten message, the Pope invites believers to prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed, warning that ‘Sin leads man to consider himself the god of creation, to see himself as its absolute master and to use it, not for the purpose willed by the Creator but for his own interests.’ … ‘Let us leave behind our selfishness and self-absorption, and turn to Jesus’ Pasch. Let us stand beside our brothers and sisters in need, sharing our spiritual and material goods with them.’ This is one of the key passages of Pope Francis’ Lenten Message for 2019. …”Stylized Ashes in Form of Cross

“On the last day of their fall meeting, the U.S. bishops’ conference voted down a resolution that would have ‘encouraged’ the Holy See to release all documents on the allegations of sexual misconduct against Archbishop Theodore McCarrick. … Cardinal William Levada, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said he did not support the resolution because it would only further the divide between the USCCB and the Vatican. He seconded Cardinal Tobin’s suggestion that the bishops instead release a statement of support of the Vatican investigation. …”

“Pope Francis accepted the resignation of … Cardinal Donald Wuerl on Friday … asking [him] to continue … on an interim basis until a permanent successor is appointed. Wuerl, 77, originally submitted his resignation … when he turned 75 …. The pope … received a Sept. 21 request from Wuerl that his resignation be accepted. … Francis defended the cardinal from … widespread criticism he has faced …. since late June, when revelations about alleged sexual misconduct on the part of his predecessor, Archbishop Theodore McCarrick, raised questions about what Wuerl knew about McCarrick, and how he responded ….

“[In addition], the Aug. 14 … grand jury report detailing decades of abuse allegations in six Pennsylvania dioceses put under close scrutiny Wuerl’s record as Bishop of Pittsburgh … from 1988 to 2006. … rais[ing] concerns that Wuerl had allowed priests accused of abuse to remain in ministry ….”

CATHOLIC FAITHWATCH: “Message of the Holy Father Francis for Lent 2018 Released; [‘Because of the increase of iniquity, the love of many will grow cold’ (Mt 24: 12)]” – VaticanVa 11.1.17

Pope Francis file photo, adapted from image (c) VIS

“Because of the increase of iniquity, the love of many will grow cold” (Mt 24: 12) … the Pasch of the Lord draws near! In our preparation for Easter, God in His Providence offers us each year the season of Lent as a ‘Sacramental Sign of our Conversion’ … to help the entire Church experience this time of grace anew, with joy and in truth.  * * * More than anything else, what destroys charity is greed for money, ‘the root of all evil’ …. The rejection of God and His Peace soon follows … What are we to do? … devoting more time to prayerAlmsgiving sets us free from greed and helps us to regard our neighbour as a brother or sister. … Fasting weakens our tendency to violence … an important opportunity for growth. … experience[ing]what the destitute and the starving … endure. … express[ing] our own spiritual hunger and thirst for life in God. Fasting wakes us up. It makes us more attentive to God and our neighbour. It revives our desire to obey God, who alone is capable of satisfying our hunger. … I urge the members of the Church to take up the Lenten journey with enthusiasm, sustained by almsgiving, fasting and prayer. If, at times, the flame of charity seems to die in our own hearts, know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew. …”

CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “Homily Of His Holiness Benedict XVI, Holy Mass on the Solemnity Of All Saints 2006” – VaticanVa

“… The liturgy invites us to share in the heavenly jubilation of the Saints, to taste their joy. The Saints are not a small caste of chosen souls but an innumerable crowd to which the liturgy urges us to raise our eyes. This multitude not only includes the officially recognized Saints, but the baptized of every epoch and nation who sought to carry out the divine will faithfully and lovingly. We are unacquainted with the faces and even the names of many of them, but with the eyes of faith we see them shine in God’s firmament like glorious stars. …”
