GOSPEL

GOSPEL: Matthew 28:16-20

Following the Resurrection of Christ, the then-remaining eleven Apostles go to a mountain in Galilee where Jesus meets them.

The Resurrected Christ commissions them to not only Proclaim the Gospel to all nations, but to make disciples of all nations. Jesus instructs them to Baptize in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the three Divine Persons of the Holy Trinity.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they all saw Him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
‘All Power in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me.
Go, therefore, and make Disciples of all nations,
Baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have Commanded you.
And behold, I AM with you always, until the end of the age.”

So we encounter a range of themes and actions:

  • the Apostles obey Christ’s instruction (to go to Galilee)
  • the Gospel is for all peoples, who are called to Discipleship
  • Jesus Commissions the Apostles to go forth and bring the Gospel to everyone
  • the Father has given Jesus all Power in Heaven and on earth
  • Baptism in the Name of all Three Persons of the Holy Trinity are part of the process of becoming Disciples
  • being taught Jesus’ Commands, and being taught to observe them, is a part of becoming a Disciple
  • even though Jesus will later Ascend to the Father, Jesus Promises that He nevertheless is still to be with the Apostles, and with us as we strive to be Disciples, until the end of the age (with this age culminating in the more visibly overt event of His Second Coming)

FIRST READING

FIRST READING: Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40

Moses exhorts the Israelites to appreciate God in their midst, and all God is doing for them, and to keep God’s Commandments.

‘… Did a people ever hear the Voice of God
speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live?
Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself
* * *
… with strong hand and outstretched arm …
* * *
… you must now know,
and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God
in the heavens above and on earth below,
and that there is no other.
You must keep His Statutes and Commandments …
that you and your children after you may prosper,
and … have long life on the land
which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever.’

SECOND READING

SECOND READING: Romans 8:14-17

Saint Paul exhorts us to realize that, led by the Spirit of God, we become Children of God calling God our Father.

… you received a Spirit of adoption,
through whom we cry, ‘Abba, Father!’
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit
that we are Children of God,
* * *
… heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,
if only we suffer with Him
so that we may also be Glorified with Him.
