To the upright I will show the Saving Power of God.

GOSPEL

GOSPEL: Mark 10:28-31

Peter reminds Jesus how the Apostles have given up everything to follow Him.

Christ promises that those who sacrifice for the Gospel will receive a hundred times more, plus Eternal Life in the age to come.

Jesus said, ‘Amen, I say to you,
there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands
for My Sake and for the Sake of the Gospel
who will not receive a hundred times more …
* * *
with persecutions, and Eternal Life in the age to come. …’

FIRST READING

FIRST READING: Sirach 35:1-12

The Prophet Sirach explains that a way to offer Sacrifices to God is by keeping God’s Law, practicing Works of Charity and abstaining from evil.

To keep the Law is a great oblation,
… he who observes the
Commandments sacrifices a peace offering.
In works of Charity one offers fine flour,
* * *
To refrain from evil pleases the LORD,
and to avoid injustice is an atonement.
Appear not before the LORD empty-handed,
* * *
In a generous spirit pay homage to the LORD,
* * *
… show a cheerful countenance,
and pay your tithes in a spirit of joy.
Give to the Most High as He has given to you,
generously, according to your means.

So some of the sign-posts offered by Sirach, to honor and worship God, include:

  • keep God’s Law
  • observe God’s Commandments
  • refrain from evil
  • avoid injustice
  • pay homage to God with a generous spirit
  • pay tithes (including by means of the above) with joy
  • God has given to us generously, so we are to give back generously, according to our means, our ability to do so
