The Wall Street Journal reports on a federal antitrust suit filed by the Federal Trade Commission and 17 states alleging Amazon monopoly power impacting pricing, sellers and competitors.

"The [FTC] and 17 states ... allege the online retailer illegally wields monopoly power that keeps prices artificially high, locks sellers into its platform and harms its rivals[,] ... [that] Amazon violated antitrust laws by using anti-discounting measures that punished merchants for offering lower prices elsewhere. [S]ellers on Amazon [allegedly] were compelled to use its logistics service if they want their goods to appear in Amazon Prime ... [with] perks [that] include faster shipping times .... [S]ellers [allegedly] feel forced to use Amazon’s services such as advertising to be successful on the platform. Between ... its logistics program, advertising and other services, 'Amazon now takes one of every $2 that a seller makes,' [the FTC Chairperson has] said ...."

Amazon has argued that the Amazon logistics network generally provides a better customer experience than other means of fulfillment.

Thirty-something FTC Chair Lina Khan now gets to act out, in public life, on her law school article from six years ago criticizing Amazon, large conglomerates generally, and their treatment by regulators and courts.
