The Wall Street Journal reports that California Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy has been removed as Speaker of the House by eight conservative Republicans joining with Democrats, by a vote of 218-208, with only 226 members of the House voting.

"The California Republican was dethroned after nine months of fighting with a hard-right conservative wing of the party, just days after he engineered legislation to avert a government shutdown. The developments plunges the House into uncertain territory, as no speaker has ever been removed from office, and effectively puts the GOP at the mercy of a dozen or so dissidents. It was unclear who the next speaker nominee for Republicans would be—whether McCarthy or someone else—and set up a potential replay of January’s dayslong speaker battle. McCarthy was made vulnerable by the GOP’s thin majority—just 221-212—and a rule pushed by conservatives that any single member could seek to remove him from office."

As reported by the New York Post, the eight Republicans joining in the vote with Democrats were:

    • Andy Biggs of Arizona
    • Ken Buck of Colorado
    • Tim Burchett of Tennessee
    • Eli Crane of Arizona
    • Matt Gaetz of Florida
    • Bob Good of Virginia
    • Nancy Mace of South Carolina
    • Matt Rosendale of Montana
