VIDEO HIGHLIGHT: CJ Carr 40-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Fields, Irish go up on Boston College 6-0
Eight seconds into the second quarter, on 4th down and 6 at the Boston College 40, ‘Notre Dame’ quarterback CJ Carr opened the scoring throwing, under pressure, a 40-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Malachi Fields. After the Irish extra-point attempt hit the upright and bounced wrong, the score remained 6-0. The touchdown capped off an 85-yard drive that took 5:20.
The play had more subtle components to it then might have first been apparent, including another receiver seemingly faking a catch on the same spot, and drawing a defender away from the receiver who actually caught it, while another cover man fell down amidst the mini-melee. Going for it on 4th and 6 at the Boston College 40, Carr took the snap in the shotgun, dropped back to around the 50, and, with several pass rushers barreling in on him, threw the ball abouth 40 yards through the air to the 10.
#0 Fields, 6-4, 222, and #2 Will Pauling, 5-10, 190, were streaking down the field along the numbers, both drawing man-to-man single coverage, Fields down the left numbers, and Pauling down the right numbers.
Around the 25 or 30, each receiver starting veering slightly towards the middle, with an angle that seemed to increase further along, so that both were converging towards the same spot around the middle of the 10-yard-line.
It was Fields who snagged the catch, as Pauling seemed to possibly fake a catch, with the cover man on Fields seemingly switching by reflex to try to tackle Pauling, while the man who had been covering Pauling fell down amidst the melee. Leaving the defensive confusion in his wake, Fields strided across the final 10 years to the endzone.
