In Lou Holtz’s first year at #NotreDame, when current Notre Dame assistant coach Greg Hudson was an underclassman player, the Irish had close games all year against elite opponents, only to take a 4-6 record into their finale against a top-20 #SouthernCal in the Coliseum. After falling behind, and still trailing 17 points in the fourth quarter, the Irish staged a furious comeback to beat the Trojans in the final moments, including contributions by future Heisman-winner and NFL great Tim Brown, future long-time NFL veterans Steve Beuerlein and John Carney, and an intense game for the ages from up and down the roster.

“Virginia Tech has a very good football team. Justin Fuente, head football coach and Bud Foster, the defensive coordinator, put together a very good year, some really good wins; North Carolina I really thought probably as complete a game as they played all year. Turned the ball over a few times, but a really good football team. Defensively it’s what you expect from Bud Foster’s team, they keep the pressure on you.
Experience in the back end of their defense I think is the key to their defense, returning starters across the board can play man, can mix it up, play some zone coverages. They’ve lost some guys up front, but Eron and Edmunds, extremely productive tackles. What you see with Virginia Tech is negative plays. And most offenses get into long yardage and Virginia Tech is one of the best in the country on third down. ….”

The Irish were leading 20-0 against Miami … when the Hurricanes recovered a bouncing punt that ricocheted off Tony Pride Jr., igniting a 27-0 run that included an onside kick, a partially blocked punt and a muffed punt that Miami recovered in in the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown …. Another bouncing punt against Michigan State ricocheted off Miles Boykin, sparking a 36-0 run by the Spartans … a game in which a 100-yard return by C.J. Sanders on the opening kickoff was called back because of a holding call. A 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Duke changed the momentum … Then there was a 74-yard punt return by Syracuse in which a player thought a fair catch had been signaled, a 24-yard punt by Tyler Newsome that set up a Texas touchdown and too many men on the field for a punt against Nevada. …”

Notre Dame blew a 20-point lead but recovered to beat Miami 30-27 on kicker Justin Yoon’s third field goal of the game, a 23-yarder with 31 seconds left … DeShone Kizer passed for 263 yards and two touchdowns as the Fighting Irish (3-5) overcame two muffed punts, a successful onside kick by Miami and a partially blocked punt to win for just the second time in their last six games, snapping a home losing streak at three games … [Miami] Quarterback Brad Kaaya passed for 288 yards, all over the last three quarters, as the Hurricanes (4-4) lost their fourth in a row. Notre Dame clinched the win when linebacker [Nyles] Morgan got to Kaaya for its fifth sack of the afternoon on the final play.
Notre Dame scored 17 points in the first quarter before Miami got a first down. When Yoon kicked his second of three field goals in the second quarter, Notre Dame had a 20-point lead before surrendering 27 unanswered points before a late 10-point rally by the Irish to bring home the win.

Notre Dame fights back to tie the score 14-14 at Texas late in the first half, with an electric, acrobatic 30-yard touchdown pass from DeShone Kizer to Equanimeous St. Brown, their second of the game, with 3:44 to go in the half. Kizer hits St. Brown in mid-stride around the Texas 4, with St. Brown flying forward off a hit from a Texas defender, then doing a somersault off his hand to flip into the end zone.

IRISH VIDEO HIGHLIGHT: Notre Dame Touchdown vs. Texas, 1st Quarter, Kizer to St. Brown 13-yard TD Pass
Notre Dame gets on the board 7-0 in their first offensive drive at Texas, with a 13-yard touchdown pass from DeShone Kizer to Equanimeous St. Brown. Kizer lofts a well-placed pass to the outside shoulder of a leaping St. Brown near the left sideline, five yards deep in the end zone. The Texas defender had decent height, at 6-2, yet the 6-5 St. Brown combined physical size with athleticism and grace, to snag the well-thrown ball for the score and get his right foot down just in-bounds. It would be Notre Dame’s only score in a first quarter that ended with the score 7-7.

… Brian Kelly says he has been preparing both quarterbacks to play …. ‘Malik will go in for one play and DeShone will go in for 6, and then Malik will go in for 5 plays and then DeShone will go in for 3. So, the net is that they get the same amount of reps but they’re not tempoed reps and there’s no rhythm to them so we’re just preparing them for that kind of eventuality,’ said … Kelly. ‘… it’s just important to be able to adapt. Being here I’ve been able to adapt to a lot of different situations so for me, I play better when it’s just time to play,’ said quarterback Malik Zaire.
