Northwestern University Performs Abortions and Trains Abortionists; Notre Dame Should Not Schedule Them

The Catholic Faith regards abortion, the deliberate killing of innocent human life in her mother’s womb, as such a serious evil that Catholic Canon Law provides automatic excommunication for abortion.
Yet Notre Dame’s football schedule and conference affiliations are riddled with open and notorious abortion providers and trainers of abortionists.
Northwestern University is one of them.
In a number of instances, Northwestern references itself as providing abortions and including abortion as part of the training it provides in one or more programs.
For example, at nm.org/conditions-and-care-areas/womens-health/obgyn/gynecology/family-planning, Northwestern indicates that its involvement includes:
Pregnancy termination:
FPC offers surgical and medical pregnancy choice options through 24 weeks of pregnancy. A majority of the second trimester patients throughout Northwestern Medicine confront severely troubled pregnancies due to maternal illness or fetal anomalies.First trimester pregnancy termination using Mifepristone/Misoprostol
- First trimester surgical abortion
- Second trimester dilation and evacuation
- Second trimester induction of labor

As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops explains, the dilation and extraction method is particularly brutal and involves dismemberment. The Northwestern website does not indicate whether additional methods are used to kill the unborn child inside the womb before the dismemberment occurs.
Additionally, abortion bans focusing on pain-capable unborn children seem to focus on 20 weeks in the womb (roughly 4.7 months) as one threshold for considering when the unborn child can feel pain. The Northwestern website does not indicate how far into the second trimester (months 4 to 6 of pregnancy) for which Northwestern performs abortions and trains abortionists.

By scheduling such an institution in athletics, the University of Notre Dame is lending wealth and prestige to an abortion provider. They also arguably are contributing to complacency and a “business as usual” attitude towards an evil of mind-boggling magnitude, with roughly 60 million surgical abortions alone in the United States since efforts to decriminalize abortion since 1973 by way of judicial obstruction of prosecutions.
There is no telling what that spirit of complacency would mean in the context of women in crisis pregnancies coming under pressure to do the unthinkable.
Abortion and contraception are not the only unsavory activities Northwestern has been associated with. In 2001, Northwestern featured a live sex act being performed in a classroom after class had been dismissed, yet was intended to be an exhibition for the subset of students who chose to remain.
Inclusion of Northwestern on the football schedule calls into question the due diligence, judgment and, by implication, the moral compass of Notre Dame university officials and decisionmakers. They should not repeat that mistake, and should conduct an overhaul of their scheduling and conference affilitations, to make sure that they are more in line with the moral and faith-based principals for which the university was created and sustained.
