CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “Confession of Saint Patrick” – Christian Classics Ethereal Library

Saint Patrick Etching, from 19th Century adapted from image at loc.gov

“I, Patrick, a sinner, a most simple countryman, the least of all the faithful and most contemptible to many, had for father the deacon Calpurnius, son of the late Potitus, a priest, of the settlement [vicus] of Bannavem Taburniae; he had a small villa nearby where I was taken captive. I was at that time about sixteen years of age. I did not, indeed, know the true God; and I was taken into captivity in Ireland with many thousands of people, according to our deserts, for quite drawn away from God, we did not keep his precepts, nor were we obedient to our priests who used to remind us of our salvation. And the Lord brought down on us the fury of his being and scattered us among many nations, even to the ends of the earth, where I, in my smallness, am now to be found among foreigners. …”

CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “Novena to Saint Patrick”

Cross Atop Rocky Cliff

“… I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need;
the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward;
the word of God to give me speech, his heav’nly host to be my guide.

Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me,
Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in the hearts of all that love me,
Christ in the mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name, the strong Name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three,
of whom all nature hath creation; Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
praise to the Lord of my salvation, salvation is of Christ the Lord. Amen. “

“Jesus said to the Pharisees:
‘There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps
that fell from the rich man’s table. …'”

“As #Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,
he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves,
and said to them on the way,
‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests
and the scribes,
and they will condemn him to death,
and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified,
and he will be raised on the third day.’ …”

“If anyone wants a high office let him want the labor it entails not the honor it will bring him. He should desire to serve and minister to everyone and not expect everyone to serve and minister to him. For the desire to be served comes from the supercilious attitude of the Pharisees; the desire to serve, from the teaching of #Christ. Those who canvass for positions of honor are the ones who exalt themselves; those who delight in serving and caring for others are the ones who humble themselves so as to be exalted by God. …”

Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,
but do not follow their example.
For they preach but they do not practice. …”

“… In #Jesus’ #Transfiguration today, He is revealed as the One through whom #God fulfills His Divine Plan from of old. Not only a new Moses, Jesus is also the “Beloved Son” promised to Abraham and again to David (see Genesis 22:15-18; Psalm 2:7; Matthew 1:1). …”

“… May this holy season of Lent help us all advance along that trail up the mountains of self-sacrifice, going out of our comfort zones by showing genuine care and concern for the good of others, both temporal and eternal, avoiding Satan’s snares, knowing we are under the protection of God’s angels. Then we may rightly anticipate the celebration of Easter with joy and spiritual longing. If we make the way for God’s grace to move us from darkness of doubt to the light of truth, from vengeance to forgiveness, from anger to reconciliation, from a do-it-yourself attitude to gracious acceptance of God’s gift, from pride to humility, we can hope to arrive at the banquet hall of the God’s kingdom in his favor. …”

FAITHLINK: “#Lent 2017: Give Up, Take Up, Lift Up!” – USCCB

Cross Atop Rocky Cliff

“In a particular way during #Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that ‘remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit.’ Take inspiration for your Lenten journey from prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection.
