CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “The Word’s Return: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time” – St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology

File Image of Pentecost Stained Glass Window Design Drawing, adapted from image at loc.gov attributed to J. & R. Lamb Studios 1857

“Today’s readings, like last week’s, ask us to meditate on Israel’s response to God’s Word—and our own. Why do some hear the word of the kingdom, yet fail to accept it as a call to conversion and faith in Jesus? That question underlies today’s Gospel, especially.

Again we see, as we did last week, that the kingdom’s mysteries are unfolded to those who open their hearts, making of them a rich soil in the which the Word can grow and bear fruit. …”

CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “My Word Shall Not Return to Me Empty – A Homily for the 15th Sunday of the Year” – Archdiocese of Washington, Msgr. Charles Pope

Artistic Drawing of Jesus Preaching in Sermon on the Mount

“… The readings for this Sunday clearly set forth that God’s Word can transform, renew, encourage, and empower us. We ought to begin to begin to expect great things from the faithful and attentive reception of the Word of God. However, Jesus also spells out some obstacles that keep the harvest small or even nonexistent for some. …”

CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “SOW THE WORD CONSTANTLY” – One Bread, One Body/ Presentation Ministries (Cincinnati)

File Photo of Sunrise at Joshua Tree National Park

“How often have you heard a Scripture passage twenty times and on the twenty-first time you hear it, the Holy Spirit makes the passage finally “jump off the page”? You receive a profound new insight into the meaning of the passage. The Word of God comes alive for you.

The Holy Spirit does this work in us. The Spirit is also working the same way in the hearts of others. That’s why we must constantly sow the Word of God (Mt 13:4). The Word that we sow might be that twenty-first time the Holy Spirit requires to touch a person’s heart. Our sowing might be that juicy bait the Lord uses to finally catch a hungry soul He has been working on for years (see Lk 5:4). Our evangelizing might be the seed that next year will produce a harvest thirty-, sixty-, or a hundredfold (Mt 13:8).”

CATHOLIC MASS READINGS: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7.16.17 – USCCB/NABRV

Historic Bible

“… ‘A sower went out to sow.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
and birds came and ate it up.
Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil.
It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep,
and when the sun rose it was scorched,
and it withered for lack of roots.
Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.
But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,
a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
Whoever has ears ought to hear. …
* * *
The seed sown on the path is the one
who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it,
and the evil one comes and steals away
what was sown in his heart.
The seed sown on rocky ground
is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.
But he has no root and lasts only for a time.
When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
he immediately falls away.
The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word,
but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word
and it bears no fruit.
But the seed sown on rich soil
is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.'”

CATHOLIC FAITHLINK: “Kateri Tekakwitha” – National Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine

File Photo of Sunrise at Joshua Tree National Park

“Kateri Tekakwitha was a young Mohawk woman who lived in the 17th century. The story of her conversion to Christianity, her courage in the face of suffering and her extraordinary holiness is an inspiration to all Christians. Follow us as we share with you the life of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American Saint in the United States of America and Canada.  Her Shrine is located in Fonda, New York. This National Shrine was created to honor Kateri and the Native peoples north and south of the border, for it was here that she was baptized on Easter Sunday April 5, 1676, and lived her teenage years. …”

CATHOLIC MASS READINGS: Memorial of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Friday 7.14.17 – USCCB/NABRV

“… ‘Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
* * *
… You will be hated by all because of My Name,
but whoever endures to the end will be Saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.
Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel
before the Son of Man comes.'”

HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI – CAPPELLA PAPALE FOR THE CANONIZATION OF THE BLESSEDS: JAMES BERTHIEU, PEDRO CALUNGSOD, JOHN BAPTIST PIAMARTA, MARIA OF MT CARMEL, SALLÉS Y BARANGUERAS, MARIANNE COPE, KATERI TEKAKWITHA, ANNA SCHÄFFER – VaticanVa 1980

“… Kateri Tekakwitha was born in today’s New York state in 1656 to a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother who gave to her a sense of the living God. She was baptized at twenty years of age and, to escape persecution, she took refuge in Saint Francis Xavier Mission near Montreal. There she worked, faithful to the traditions of her people, although renouncing their religious convictions until her death at the age of twenty-four. Leading a simple life, Kateri remained faithful to her love for Jesus, to prayer and to daily Mass. Her greatest wish was to know and to do what pleased God. She lived a life radiant with faith and purity.

Kateri impresses us by the action of grace in her life in spite of the absence of external help and by the courage of her vocation, so unusual in her culture. In her, faith and culture enrich each other! May her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are. Saint Kateri, Protectress of Canada and the first native American saint, we entrust to you the renewal of the faith in the first nations and in all of North America! May God bless the first nations! …”

But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.’
Jesus rose and followed him, and so did His Disciples. …
