Disciples clear a path and pick off heads of grain on the Sabbath, even though apparently there was a practical need for them to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus reminds them of how King David and his companions were hungry and needed food, and ate bread of offering otherwise reserved to the Jewish priest.<\/p>\n<p>The Sabbath is made for man, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then He said to them, &#8216;The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.\u00a0That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the sabbath.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Disciplines like the keeping of the Sabbath are intended for our betterment and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being a time of prayer and worship of God, helping us keep &#8220;on track,&#8221; the Sabbath also serves our practical need for rest.<\/p>\n<p>By way of example, one recalls a secular documentary about Irish Catholic immigrants in America. At one point in time, in the 19th century, the life expectancy was not long for them, due to arduous work. when God wanted to give the heirs of His Promise\u00a0an even clearer demonstration of the immutability of His Purpose, He intervened with an oath,\u00a0so that by two immutable things,\u00a0in which it was impossible for God to lie,\u00a0we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged\u00a0to hold fast to the hope that lies before us.\u00a0This we have as an anchor of the soul,\u00a0sure and firm, which reaches into the interior behind the veil,\u00a0where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner,\u00a0becoming high priest forever\u00a0according to the order of Melchizedek.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"gold-soft-2\">LINKS &amp;
