{"id":1103,"date":"2015-06-09T01:27:04","date_gmt":"2015-06-09T05:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stevencwelsh.info\/faith-central\/catholic-faith-central-christian-update\/?p=1103"},"modified":"2015-06-09T01:27:04","modified_gmt":"2015-06-09T05:27:04","slug":"eight-beatitudes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevencwelsh.info\/faith-central\/catholic-faith-central-christian-update\/eight-beatitudes\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight Beatitudes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/usccb.org\/bible\/matthew\/5:1\" target=\"_blank\">the Gospel of Matthew, starting in Chapter 5<\/a>, Jesus gives the Sermon on the Mount, beginning with the Eight Beatitudes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Blessed are the poor in spirit,<br \/>\nfor theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are they who mourn,<br \/>\nfor they will be comforted.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are the meek,<br \/>\nfor they will inherit the land.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,<br \/>\nfor they will be satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are the merciful,<br \/>\nfor they will be shown mercy.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are the clean of heart,<br \/>\nfor they will see God.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are the peacemakers,<br \/>\nfor they will be called children of God.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,<br \/>\nfor theirs is the Kingdom of eaven.<br \/>\nBlessed are you when they insult you and persecute you<br \/>\nand utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of Me.<br \/>\nRejoice and be glad,<br \/>\nfor your Reward will be great in Heaven.<br \/>\nThus they persecuted the Prophets who were before you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus exhorts us to persevere and take comfort that God is Just and Merciful, and that God&#8217;s Way will prevail in the end.<\/p>\n<p>We see a before-and-after focus for each point Christ makes. \u00a0He speaks of what is experienced, endured or exemplified now, and what will happen later.<\/p>\n<p>We also see Jesus exhort us to certain virtues and virtuous action, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>humility<\/li>\n<li>mercy<\/li>\n<li>purity, cleanness of heart<\/li>\n<li>peacemaking<\/li>\n<li>perseverance in fidelity to God, even in the face of persecution<\/li>\n<li>Jesus also speaks of hungering and thirsting for righteousness<\/li>\n<li>when Jesus speaks of mourning, is that to promise comfort? or is He praising the capacity to mourn, because it implies caring and valuing other persons, as opposed to apathy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Gospel of Matthew, starting in Chapter 5, Jesus gives the Sermon on the Mount, beginning with the Eight Beatitudes.
