FIRST READING

FIRST READING: Ephesians 2:19-22

Saint Paul reminds us of how followers of Christ form a broader structure, in unity with Jesus and the Saints, calling us to be a Dwelling Place for God.

… built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets,
… Christ Jesus Himself as the Capstone.
Through Him the whole structure … held together
… in Him you also are being built together
into a Dwelling Place of God in the Spirit.

On this Feast Day of the Apostles Saint Simon the Zealot and Saint Jude, we also are reminded of how the Apostles help form the foundations of the Church built by Christ.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

PSALM 19:2-3, 4-5

Their Message goes out through all the earth.

GOSPEL

GOSPEL: Luke 6:12-16

Jesus spends the night on prayer on a mountaintop, taking the Disciples with Him.

Jesus went up to the mountain to pray,
and He spent the night in prayer to God.

From among the Disciples, Jesus chooses the Apostles.

… He chose Twelve, whom He also named Apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter … his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

On this Feast Day of the Apostles Saint Simon the Zealot and Saint Jude, we are reminded of the personal names of the Apostles, and how they were personally chosen by Christ.

Additionally we see the example, set for us, of Jesus in prayer.  Specifically we also see Christ setting the example of praying before announcing an important decision.
