Notre Dame Switches to Remote Learning After Covid-19 Coronavirus Spike, Might Send Students Home - SCW

After reopening for in-person learning earlier in August, the University of Notre Dame is temporarily switching to online classes for at least two weeks, after a spike in Covid-19 coronavirus cases, some linked to one or more off-campus parties. There is a possibility that the school will send students back home.

Meanwhile, the college is attempting to limit student gatherings to 10 people, either on-campus or off-campus; is attempting to ban off-campus students from visiting campus, apparently with the exception of graduate students; and is attempting to keep on-campus students from leaving campus except for emergencies. In addition, the administration is inviting students to report other students not following health guidelines.

According to CBS, one off-campus party lacked masks and social distancing, placing the status of the hosts in peril with the university:

"University officials have pinned the surge of infections to an off-campus party, where students didn't wear masks and social distancing wasn't practiced. Per university policy, the hosts of the party may have 'jeopardize[d] their ability to remain a part of the University community.'"

According to CNBC, university president Rev. John Jenkins, C.S.C. is threatening to send students home:

"The University of Notre Dame will move undergraduate instruction online for two weeks to try to curb a coronavirus outbreak on campus, warning that it may send students home if cases don’t fall, President Rev. John Jenkins said Tuesday.

'If these steps are not successful, we’ll have to send students home as we did last spring,' Jenkins warned during a conference call. 'The virus is a formidable foe. For the past week it has been winning.'"

In pre-screening prior to the attempted reopening, less than 1% of more than 12,000 students tested positive for the virus. However, since Aug. 6 roughly 16% of 927 new tests have been positive. There have been 80 new cases since Sunday, with half of 30 tests processed Sunday coming back positive.
